It's hard to know what's going to be important. I think it's all important, just not necessarily in this book. I honestly would have waited til they were all out to read them if I'd realized that. I can see why I started to see so much more about the series as people read book three, because so much stuff starts to come together from books 1-2. There's a lot of little things that have made this one tough for me-- a slow start, the narration, some of the writing choices (nothing can be just red or green or blue it is all crimson, emerald, and sapphire), and the fact that the plot is all over the place. There's the competition, the murders, the romance, the political stuff... it is hard to sort out this early on in the series what actually matters. I thought at first it would be the competition in a Hunger Games style thing, but that never happened. The murder mystery aspect just kind of hangs in the background, not taking main stage either. So, oddly for my fantasy preferences, this clicks the most once the romance kicks in because that is actually on screen and interesting and Chaol and Dorian are guys I both kind of like. I've got about 3.5 more hours left to listen to and I still have no idea what my review or rating will be like or if I want to read further on in the series.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
